We’ve now drilled to 3755m MD so are approaching the end of the 12¼“ section of EG-1. At 4000m, we’ll be tripping out of the hole to run and cement casing (in other words to line this section), before embarking on the final section of the well, and the last part of our journey towards […]

Over 2 miles down!
We’ve now drilled to 3450m MD. That’s over 2 miles, a distance it’d take about 45 minutes to walk at an average pace. Or the equivalent of about 11 Shard buildings or Eiffel Towers stacked one on top of another! Our journey this week has highlighted the beauty of the micro world. These perfectly formed […]
Things are hotting up as drilling passes halfway mark
We’re now well past halfway towards our target depth of 4.5 kilometres, and with drilling continuing at around 70 metres a day, we are optimistic we’ll reach our target depth in the next two-and-a-half months. We have also been greatly encouraged by the temperatures being recorded as drilling goes deeper, and are confident that when […]
Geology helping drilling ahead
We’ve passed another milestone on our journey to the centre of the earth beneath the Eden Project – on Monday we drilled past the 2000m MD mark! As of 6am today, we’ve drilled to 2293m MD. The higher ROP (rate of penetration) achieved recently is due to the geology we’ve encountered: we’ve been able to […]
Community projects benefit from Eden Geothermal grants
Nine groups based near the Eden Project have been awarded grants from the Eden Geothermal Community Fund for projects that benefit local people and improve the environment or community facilities. The £20,000 fund was launched in November last year, with applications received for a wide variety of projects across Treverbyn, Carlyon, St Blaise and Luxulyan […]
Project update 21st July 2021: faults, caves and ‘kicking off’
Casing and cementing our 17 ½“ well section went smoothly, and we’re now drilling the longest section of the well – the 12 ¼” diameter section. At 1706m MD, we “kicked off”: that is, we started drilling directionally, steering east on a trajectory designed to intersect with the Great Crosscourse fault. Now we’re in the […]
Great new ‘Fully Charged’ film about Eden Geothermal
We loved meeting Robert Llewellyn (better known to some as ‘Kryten from Red Dwarf’) when he visited Eden Geothermal to make a film for the Fully Charged clean energy channel. A great in-depth look at our project and the potential of geothermal more widely – not to mention an insider’s view of operations on the […]
Drilling of 17 1/2″ section of EG-1 completed at 1510m section TD
Another milestone reached today, as we completed drilling the 17 ½” section of EG-1 at 1510m section TD, and are now preparing to run casing. This week’s geology sample from our wellsite geologists at GeoScience Ltd comes from 1385m MD, where we encountered some interesting mineralogy, including this Jasper specimen. Usually considered as impure chalcedony, […]
Environment Minister visits Eden’s ground-breaking Hot Rocks project and tours Biomes
Environment Minister Rebecca Pow has made a special visit to the Eden Project to see first-hand the pioneering Eden Geothermal energy project and then tour the world-famous Biomes with Co-Founder Sir Tim Smit. Drilling of the first well by Eden Geothermal Ltd began in the middle of May and is making great progress, now […]
Drilling update 30/06/21
This morning, drilling at EG-1, our first well beneath the Eden Project, reached 1266m MD. This week’s geology sample was taken at 1200m MD and shows a typical example of altered granite, with kaolinite and chlorite alteration.
